French
In line with the National Curriculum for MFL in KS2, at Great Rollright, our children will be taught French in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. They will gain experience in different topic areas in a way that will enable them to have a basic grasp of a new language to communicate confidently. Also, they will be encouraged to embrace another culture, as well as appreciate the connections between English and French.
In KS2, we follow a broad and balanced French curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. We follow the Kapow French scheme that ensures a progression of skills and covers all aspects of the MFL curriculum. KS2 classes have a weekly 30-40 minute French lesson in almost every term. The Kapow scheme uses single-year planning, so we have rearranged the units to suit our mixed-year classes. Lessons follow a similar structure to the rest of curriculum whereby prior learning is revisited, new learning is introduced in small steps and children have chance for independent practice.
Teachers at Great Rollright continuously monitor the impact of the French curriculum, and whether the work pupils do over time matches the intended curriculum. We use the benchmark of our clearly sequenced curriculum to evaluate whether what we want our pupils to know and do well are evident in their outcomes in daily lessons and end of unit outcomes. Outcomes of this continuous process are recorded as evidence which is used by Teachers to evaluate the implementation of the curriculum and adjust sequences of work accordingly.
As a church school, we also evaluate whether pupils are demonstrating our core spiritual and moral values by their attitudes and behaviour in French lessons. We triangulate evidence to ensure are pupils have a love for learning by the joy of being able to connect with people in another language. That they exhibit respect by recognising that learning someone else’s language is an act of respect in itself. That they are able to demonstrate courage by being brave enough to try speaking French aloud, even when not confident in pronunciation. That they show truth by working carefully on spelling, pronunciation and grammar to communicate clearly, as well as admitting when they don’t understand and seek help rather than guessing.
