Piano tuition
We are extremely lucky to have Tom Painting, who comes to Rollright twice a week to teach piano. Please see below for a message from Tom.
‘I’m a patient and encouraging teacher, and I tailor my lessons to inspire and develop the children’s own musical interests. The lessons can cover the classics as well as favourite pop songs (George Ezra, Ed Sheeran, etc.) and movie themes (Frozen, Encanto, Harry Potter, etc.).
I prepare students for ABRSM graded exams if this is something the pupil is keen to do. I’m proud to say that my students have a 100% pass rate in these exams, and a higher than average rate of merit and distinction classifications. The piano is an ideal place to start for a young musician, since learning makes it easier to pick up any other orchestral instrument later on because of the notation crossover and theoretical skills developed when learning to play.
Here are the different lesson plans:
- Group of 3, 20 minutes, £4. A good place to start and cover the basics. Playing time is shared and tuition is mostly generalised.
- 1 to 1, 20 minutes, £11. Tuition is specific to the individual’s own understanding and technique with more guided playing time.
- 1 to 1, 30 minutes, £15. The best value for tailored tuition and guided playing time.
The lessons will be once a week during term time and billed half termly (generally ~6 at a time). They will take place on the school site during the school day, so there’s no need to juggle any after school activities or pick-up times. Feedback can be provided weekly via a notebook, and my emails are always open for any questions!
If you would like to register for the lessons please email tom.painting@yahoo.co.uk along with your name, your child’s name and year group, which lesson plan you’re interested in and a contact mobile number. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Thank you!’
Clarinet Lessons –with Ruth Lewis BA (hons) ATCL – please see below for some information from Ruth
My name is Ruth and I am extremely excited to start offering Clarinet Lessons at Great Rollright Primary School. Lessons will start after Christmas and will be offered on a Thursday during the school day.
The clarinet is a wonderful instrument which can be played in many different styles and ensembles – from Jazz Bands to Orchestras, Wind Bands and in Woodwind Quintets. It also sounds beautiful played on its own or with a piano accompaniment. Learning an instrument allows children to develop skills which are important for life, such as discipline, responsibility, creativity, and memory skills – it can also lead to future careers!
- I will be offering individual 20-minute lessons, all during the school day. 30-minute lessons are available on request.
- There will be 30 lessons per academic year (10 per term) and these are available to KS2 children.
- Children can work towards graded exams offered by Trinity College London if they wish.
- Lessons are priced at £120 for 10 lessons.
Please contact me directly if you wish to take lessons, by email or phone.

About me
After playing the clarinet as a child and loving music, a musical career seemed like the perfect choice for me. This led to a professional career 14 years ago when I joined the British Army as a Musician. I joined The Band of The Irish Guards, based in London and performed for events such as Changing the Guard and Trooping the Colour, as well as for HM The Queen’s Funeral and for HM The King’s Coronation. I have regularly played in The Albert Hall, Royal Ascot, Silverstone and for numerous Buckingham Palace Garden Parties. I have also performed all over the world, including in Cyprus, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia. Mentoring and teaching other musicians has always been a passion of mine and I love to enhance people’s musical ability. I grew up in Hook Norton and now live in Bicester with my husband, two young children and West Highland Terrier. In my spare time I love running, skiing, reading, and baking.
