At Great Rollright, children’s wellbeing, happiness and safety are our priority. We regard PSHE as an integral component of the curriculum, central to our nurturing approach and at the core of our ethos. In line with the National Curriculum, PSHE focuses on developing personal attributes including love, courage, truth, and respect. The Health and Relationships aspects of our curriculum ensure all our children are prepared for the changes and transitions they will experience in their lives. We use Jigsaw PSHCRE to support the development of the skills, attitudes, values, and behaviours, which enable pupils to have a sense of purpose, value self and others; form relationships; make and act on informed decisions; communicate effectively; work with others; respond to challenge; be an active partner in their own learning; be active citizens within the local community; explore issues related to living in a democratic society and become healthy, fulfilled individuals. We are also proud ambassadors for the No Outsiders programme as we actively promote tolerance and a respect for diversity.

Jigsaw brings together PSED and PSHCRE, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Teaching strategies are varied according to task and intention. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme at the same time. There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence throughout the year. Each Puzzle has six Pieces (lessons) which work towards an ‘end product’. Each Piece (lesson) has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHCRE learning (covering the non-statutory national framework for PSHCRE and the statutory Health and Relationships Education guidance but enhanced to address children’s needs today); and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development to enhance children’s emotional and mental health. The enhancements mean that Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with issues like body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and internet safety. Every Piece (lesson) contributes to at least one of these aspects of children’s development. This is mapped on each Piece and balanced across each year group.

As PSHE is taught in mixed-age classes, the Jigsaw Puzzles (which are aimed at single year groups) have been sequenced as appropriate across a two-year cycle. In UKS2, Health and Relationships is taught in single-year groups to ensure it is age-appropriate.

The No Outsiders scheme is incorporated throughout the curriculum with specific texts recommended throughout the year. These are also used in a weekly assembly led by the head-teacher.

Throughout the school year, we incorporate our PSHE into our assemblies. We hold a special weekly Celebration Assembly where children are rewarded for hard work, acts of love and kindness and a wide range of achievements. Other assemblies throughout the week support the learning and messages from the PSHE curriculum and issues which are important to the children.

We make an effort to instil British Values through taking part in a variety of celebrations and fundraising events for charity. We also have themed weeks within school, encouraging our children to take our learning out of the classroom and into the wider world e.g. Anti-Bullying Week. We include visitors from the wider community to reinforce our messages whenever appropriate, such as the police.

Teachers at Great Rollright continuously monitor the impact of the PSHRE curriculum, and whether the work pupils do over time matches the intended curriculum. We use the benchmark of our clearly sequenced curriculum to evaluate whether what we want our pupils to know and do well are evident in their outcomes in daily lessons and end of unit outcomes. Outcomes of this continuous process are recorded as evidence which is used by Teachers to evaluate the implementation of the curriculum and adjust sequences of work accordingly.
As a church school, we also evaluate whether pupils are demonstrating our core spiritual and moral values by their attitudes and behaviour in PSHRE lessons.  We triangulate evidence to ensure are pupils have a love for themselves and each other as citizens of a diverse global community.  That they exhibit respect by recognising that people across the world have differences through their cultures, traditions, and beliefs which should be treated with dignity.  That they are able to demonstrate courage by asking and answering challenging questions about controversial issues such as prejudice, racism and equality.  That they are truthful and able to reflect on their own emotions and values, as well as understanding how to stand up for themselves and others by speaking their truths when things don’t feel right.

At Great Rollright C.E. School, we have reviewed our PSHE and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) provision in light of government recommendations.
