Physical Education
In line with the National Curriculum, we believe all pupils at Great Rollright should be taught skills that will positively impact on their future and that being physically active is an essential element of this. We aim to deliver high-quality PE lessons that inspire all children to succeed and be self-motivated. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and good sportsmanship both in inter- and intra-competitive school games. Individual achievement and progress is also highly valued as we believe that this will embed life-long values to incorporate physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. PE is taught to develop a child’s skill and understanding across a range of sporting areas, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We also teach a variety of sports: dance, athletics, gymnastics, games, swimming and water safety, and outdoor adventure activities.
At Great Rollright, PE is taught twice a week for both indoor and outdoor activities. The Getset4PE scheme is taught throughout the school. Activities that tie in with partnership events are planned into the year so that children are able to train and develop appropriate skills. When necessary, lessons are taught in smaller groups so that children can use our available space safely and appropriately.
PE in EYFS focuses on the fundamental movements needed to develop all PE skills, including fine and gross motor skills. As part of continuous provision, EYFS and KS1 children have access to small group activities, as well as equipment, to develop their physical skills.
Swimming is initially taught in KS1 where we aim to ensure that all children learn to become competent swimmers. Some children require longer to achieve this standard than others so they will continue lessons in KS2.
In addition to break-times and PE lessons, all children are encouraged to participate in something active (weather-dependent) – skipping, running or walking – every day. During break-times, ‘play leaders’ in UKS2 lead games for the younger children to encourage them to be active and improve their skills and stamina.
We are active members in our local school sports partnership which gives KS2 children opportunities to take part in competitive sporting events. This also gives us access to club links where we can signpost our able and interested young sportspeople. We are participants of Sainsbury’s School Games and have achieved a Gold Award for several years.

PE Funding
The government has provided P.E. funding annually since September 2013 to support the development of P.E. in schools. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The money has gone directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Schools spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this. The PE funding Impact Statement can be found under the PE & Sport Premium link on the Information Page
