Becoming a House Captain at Great Rollright School is a serious business.
The children in Year Six are asked annually if they would like to stand for ‘election’ and they then prepare speeches which are presented to the whole school in a special assembly. This year the standard of the election campaign was extremely high and we were very proud of all those children who had carefully and thoughtfully prepared their speeches. Below are some extracts of the speeches –
‘I believe everyone should enjoy their time at school which includes:
-Being happy at school – I try to be a good friend to everyone – I am an anti-bullying ambassador and spent my Year 5 breaks making sure no one was left on their own, offering a friendly face on the Buddy Bench. I truly believe in the school message of ‘No Outsiders’.
-Being heard – I believe everyone should feel a part of the school, have a voice and have their ideas heard to improve all aspects of school. I am a good listener and promise to explore everyone’s ideas with the relevant committees and teachers.’ (Ashton)
‘I stand here before like the captains of the past. Let me be your leader as this year is my last.
I have passion and belief in everything I do and I promise I will do my best for all of you.’ (Lottie)
‘When I started school I was really shy. Thanks to my teachers, I’ve got a lot more confident. I want to show all of you that even if you feel shy and scared too, you can be brave like me. I would like to be a role model and show everyone that trying hard is important. I have dyslexia so I find some subjects hard, especially spelling. But I try my best. I hope that people can look at me and think, ‘If they can do it, then maybe I can too…
I promise I will always respect others. I know what it’s like to feel like you’re a bit different to other people because I am non-binary. I am not always very loud but I will listen to you if you have something to say and I will try to help if you have a problem.’ (Eliza)
‘The role of house captain would be a very rewarding experience for me because it will give me the chance to grow in confidence, listen to others and contribute to our school community. I would like the opportunity to show my house team I can be a positive role model.’ (Arthur)
It was a very closely fought contest but four new House Captains and Vice Captains were elected to represent Hawks, Owls, Kestrels and Eagles this year. These children will be responsible for leading their houses in team events as well as being given extra responsibilites as ambassadors for our lovely school.
