Today, managing to nip out between the showers, Mountain Class completed their first act of kindness task to mark David Attenborough’s birthday. They have worked together to complete a field work survey of the school grounds to find out about the current biodiversity of the school groups. Small groups went off to different areas of the grounds and used a hoop to survey the variety of plants and animals found within it. They repeated this 3 times within their area. They also tried to identify as many of the species as they could. We found some that we really enjoyed the names of!
The results now stand as a baseline to see if as a school, over time, we can increase the diversity of living things found on the field. The children reflected on the current results and thought about how the areas with low and high variety were different and proposed some ideas to try e.g. having more no-mow areas, creating more sheltered places and even growing more plants (with edible ideas being very popular!).
